Synopsis

Zen and SueKi as visual art and dance collaborators first collaborated in Berlin for Zen Teh’s multi-city research on light and darkness in urban spaces. They’re interested in opening up a space where people can take time to process and discuss their embodied perspectives on light and darkness, and how these ever co-existing elements are inextricably linked to life rhythms, memories, pollution, urban development, safety and surveillance, environmental changes, accessibility of energy, and volatile global political states.

Public workshops focusing on eliciting embodied experiences and critical reflection on light and darkness in urban spaces underpins the art making process. In this edition of SAW 2025, the research and collaborative process extends further to include both pre-exhibition workshop (embodiment of light) and exhibition movement workshop where the public will be able to contribute to the artists’ art making process as well as interact with the exhibits in meaningful ways.

Public programmes:

1. Pre-exhibition Workshop: Embodiment of Light Workshop:
A workshop with 8-10 participants will be conducted. This will take the form of a walking tour at selected dark/dim sites in each city.

Reflective accounts on the embodied experiences on-site, as well as photographic responses from workshop participants will form the database. Data visualization will form the information basis for visual coding, and translation into performance and immersive installation forms. This workshop is a continuation of a workshop series by Zen Teh, where similar workshops have been conducted in Berlin, Phnom Penh and Bangkok, as part of her residency project at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien. The data generated by Singapore’s workshop will similarly contribute to the art making process of the data visualization videos, light installation and choreographed movements in the exhibition space.

2. Exhibition movement workshop:
Open movement workshop during SAW week
(Open to all ages, all movement levels)
In the space and context of the immersive exhibition, participants will be guided to interact with the exhibition with their body as a medium: How can we tune in to the body's instinct in reaction to light and darkness as we move through the space? What are the thoughts and emotions that come up, and how can we allow and express this through our bodies?
Through specific questions and prompts, the participants will delve into the thought process and considerations that goes into the exhibition and the performance. The exploration of space through movement also encourages reflection on how our bodies navigate the everyday, and to value our bodies as a container of embodied experience and knowledge.

3. Public performance at Objectifs
SueKi will be performing at Objectifs during the exhibition opening on 15 January. There will also be another performance on the same day as the exhibition movement workshop.
