Synopsis
OH! Open House invites you to Adam Park, a fabled black and white bungalow nestled in a lush rolling landscape. While black-and-whites have exuded a sense of exclusivity in Singapore, the story is much blacker than you might imagine.
Modelled on Anglo-Indian tropical architecture, the plantation villa is built upon a foundation of deceit, violence and cheap lives. Whether it's smuggling rubber seeds, the spy thriller theft of of tea from thriller, or the murder of an entire island for nutmeg, plantation villas are not just pastoral postcards of the colonial.
Spread open the map and you will see two more important landmarks that have been whitewashed in the story of our black-and-whites: Botanic Gardens and Tiger Hill. Come join us on this art walk to discover the colonial gaze shapes our relationship to land and nature, and how the tiger turns away from the power of the gaze.
