Synopsis

The Squares is the first solo presentation by Burmese duo, Tun Win Aung and Wah Nu, at Richard Koh Fine Art in Singapore. The exhibition presents the latest series from their ongoing, expansive body of work, “Thousand Pieces of White” (begun 2009), that reflects on 30 years of personal experience. This series includes abstract paintings created from old Burmese magazines that have been censored. The pages of these publications, featuring redacted sections in silver and black, are assimilated into biochromatic, minimalist abstractions on canvas, resurrecting these remnants of yesteryear in an incongruous visual vocabulary. Also included in the exhibition is the full, restored version of the 1973 film, Tender are the Feet (Ché Phawa Daw Nu Nu), by acclaimed Burmese director, Maung Wunna. Tun Win Aung and Wah Nu have intervened into the film at moments where censored scenes or dialogue no longer exist, creating a palimpsestic text that pays tribute to its own mutilation. The Squares, curated by Louis Ho, The Squares provides a micro-history of a particular era in Myanmar, and the unexpected, material residue of those times.
