Synopsis
Built in the mid 1970s, Katong Shopping Centre was once hallmarked as the most modern shopping complex in Singapore. Apart from being the first shopping mall to have air conditioning, the historic structure also stands out in terms of its unique architectural design and bright colors. Today the iconic mall is currently on en bloc (collective sale) – a development that points to how the building will not be around forever. When Does a Frame Become a Memory? Is an ode to the little, everyday sights that over time unknowingly form part of our visual memory of a place. Featuring a media installation at Katong Shopping Centre itself, the piece pays tribute to the intimate frames at the mall, prompting viewers to contemplate their relationship to built environment in terms of cultural memory, space, and placemaking.
