Synopsis

Built in the mid-1970s, Katong Shopping Centre was once celebrated as Singapore’s most modern shopping hub, being the first mall in the country to feature air conditioning. Today, the iconic shopping centre is up for en bloc sale — marking a significant moment in its history and a reminder that no structure, no matter how iconic, lasts forever. When Does a Frame Become a Memory? is a tribute to the everyday moments that, over time, subtly become part of our collective visual memory of a place. Featuring a media projection within Katong Shopping Centre itself, the work invites viewers to contemplate their relationship to the built environment given the ever changing social and cultural fabric of urban spaces.
